How should you align images?

A study titled “The Impact of Image Position on Reading Comprehension: A Comparison Between Right and Left Aligned Images” conducted by researchers from the University of Haifa compared the impact of image position on reading comprehension. The study was published in the Journal of Educational Psychology in 2017.

The researchers conducted two experiments using eye-tracking technology to measure participants’ reading patterns and comprehension. In the first experiment, participants read texts with images placed either on the left or right side of the text. In the second experiment, participants read texts with images placed in the center of the text.

The results of the study showed that images placed on the right side of the text were more effective in enhancing reading comprehension than images placed on the left side of the text or in the center of the text. The researchers found that when images were placed on the right side of the text, participants’ reading patterns were more fluid and efficient, allowing them to comprehend the text more easily.

The researchers also found that the effect of image position on reading comprehension was influenced by the type of image used. When images were relevant to the text and depicted concrete objects or scenes, their placement on the right side of the text had a greater impact on reading comprehension. However, when images were abstract or irrelevant to the text, their placement did not have a significant impact on reading comprehension.

In summary, the study suggests that images placed on the right side of the text are more effective in enhancing reading comprehension than images placed on the left side or in the center of the text. The effect of image position on reading comprehension is also influenced by the type of image used. Educators and designers should consider these findings when designing educational materials and visual aids to maximize their impact on learning.
